22, 2024, is not merely a date on the calendar but heralds the advent of a new
era." The site had witnessed the demolition of the mosque in 1992,
inciting religious riots that claimed 2,000 lives, predominantly Muslims, and
shook India's secular political foundations.
As tens of thousands of jubilant devotees flooded the town
of Ayodhya, chanting and dancing, roads congested, and trains overflowing,
Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) viewed the opening of the Ram Mandir
temple as a pivotal moment in aligning the country's governance with its
majority faith.
"The Lord has made me an instrument to represent all
the people of India," proclaimed Modi as he commenced an 11-day ritual
fast leading up to the 'auspicious' opening.
Amidst the fervor, with Hindu believers dancing in the
streets and excitement reaching a crescendo, the elaborate temple, costing an
estimated $240 million, became the focal point. Devotees, driven by their
faith, embarked on journeys spanning hundreds of kilometers to witness this
historic moment.
For 54-year-old Bukesh Rajiybng, the three-day journey on a
crowded train was a testament to the decades-long dream coming to fruition.
"It's a moment we have all dreamed of for decades. I think the people and
Ram will definitely bless Modi for this."
However, amidst the jubilation, there are dissenting
voices. Mohammed Shahid, recounting the tragic loss of his father in the
religious turmoil, sees the temple as a symbol of 'death and destruction.' As
Modi consecrates the temple, projecting himself as a defender of the faith, the
upcoming general election looms with the BJP expected to secure another
victory, leveraging Hindu nationalism.
